An instrument is a tool used for primary data collection. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods use instruments. For example, in survey research, the data collection instrument is the questionnaire. In qualitative research, the instrument may be a discussion guide, an interview guide, an ethnographic field guide, or an app-based platform task list.
