A variable is something that is measured. In survey research, we use variables to measure attitudes or behaviors. For example, if we ask about the likelihood of purchasing a new car in the next six months follows by a 5-point likelihood scale (ranging from “Not at all likely” to “Very likely”), the “variable” is “likelihood to purchase a new car.”
