In market research surveys, we use both closed-ended and open-ended questions. Closed-ended questions include rating scales, rank order questions, checklists, and so on. However, even in a short questionnaire, we often include one or two open-ended questions. Open-ended questions are most commonly used in customer satisfaction surveys, where they follow up on closed-ended questions to gather more detailed feedback (for example, this is often done in Net Promoter Score (NPS) surveys), but open-ended questions in our Questionnaire Design 201 course, our course Open-Ended Questions (which covers their design, presentation, and analysis), as well as how to efficiently summarize results from them in Writing Quantitative Research Reports.
